On January 21st, 2019, AUD had the distinct opportunity to welcome H.E. Akima Umezawa to discuss the history of Japan, identifying its unique values, traditions, and social strata. Dr. Akima rooted Japan’s cultural uniqueness through the biological narrative of its Japanese citizens. He cites that the value of collective harmony has manifested as a result of this biological narrative.
He further discussed the importance of respect, cleanliness, and discipline within the Japanese culture, all of which are integrated in the Japanese education system.
Lastly, Dr. Akima juxtaposed Japan’s singular heritage with its role in the global world, highlighting its robust economy, its technological capital, and its high residential safety, among others.
